S1 | E4: Three Pillars: Self-Healing

This episode is the third in a series of episodes where I am introducing you to the 3 pillars of the work of the Ways of the Rising Woman! We will be exploring the third of the 3 pillars today which is the practice of Self-Healing.

There are specific practices and ways of being that are powerful medicine that can heal lifetimes of programming around who we are allowed to be, what we are allowed to want, how others are allowed to treat us, how much joy and wonder we are able to hold in our bodies and it softens the tattered edges of trauma and becomes a healing balm for the traumatic effects of colonization, destructive cultural norms, personal/familial traumas, and self-limiting belief patterns that keep us small, quiet, and obedient.

Radical Wholeness: A conversation with Philip Shepherd

In this episode we will explore Philip Shepherd's new book called Radical Wholeness that shows that the primary deficiency inflicted on us by our culture is the inability to feel wholeness--in the self, the body, and the world around us. Because we have been systematically trained to numb ourselves to wholeness and to confine our attention to the boundary of the self, we live in our heads, disconnected from the body and at odds with the world. We accept that it's normal to feel fragmented, reactionary, and stale. This book is a call to action to recover wholeness and to experience a new way of being. Philip Shepherd draws from neuroscience, anthropology, physics, art, and myth--as well as his extensive work as an international embodiment expert--to explain how our culture's limitations live in the body, and to help readers transcend them. Part III: Learning How to Dwell in a Place: A Practice in Decolonization with Dr. Leny Strobel and Dr. Bayo Akomolafe

How might we learn how to Dwell in a Place, learn how to be part of the landscape, or learn how to see and feel in a whole new way? By learning how to dance, chant, and do ritual? To greet the ancient redwoods in our backyards every morning and hug the trees in the garden? To put our hands in the soil and try to learn the names of all the non-human beings we live with? All these take time. Slowness is key. Practicing presence is difficult for us in this modern culture. We are latecomers to this way of being and while we may still feel resistance sometimes, this may be the essential practice to undo our current cultural conditionings. Join us for this conversation on disengaging from the intellectual life that demands a loyalty to the faculty of reason with the body and emotions served only as side dishes on the menu of the canon and learn how to bring your whole self - body, mind, heart, spirit - into the only life you have to live, because when you do it changes everything.

Part III: Re-entangling Humans with Nature: A Spirituality and Ecology of Belonging with Dr. Apffel-Marglin

Even in the 21st century, two-thirds of the world's peoples live in non-modern places. In such places the multitudinous voices of the spirits & deities of the other-than-human world continue to be heard, continue to be loved or feared or both, continue to accompany human beings in all their activities. In this episode, Apffel-Marglin draws on a lifetime of work with indigenous peoples of Peru & India to explore how the beliefs, values, & practices of such traditional peoples recognize that human beings are in communion with other beings in nature that have agency & are kinds of spiritual intelligences. Ritual is the medium for communicating, creating & working with the other-than-humans, who daily remind the humans that the world is not for humans' exclusive use. When such relationships are robust, human lifeways are rich & environmentally sustainable. The objective is to ''re-entangle'' humans in nature, by promoting a spirituality & ecology of belonging & connection to nature.

What if the Way we Respond to the Crisis is Part of the Crisis? With Bayo Akomolafe

Will a radically different world that works for everyone ever happen? Will we ever find lasting wellness, and thrive in community, as it seems we are meant to? In this interview, our conversation grapples with the promise of social change, the repetitive cycle of sameness that stifles novelty and keeps us perpetuating familiar paradigms and patterns of behaviour. We ask, along with Bayo and the organization he started, ‘what if the way we respond to crisis is part of the crisis?’ Bayo shares about practices across the world that are opening up new places of power, inviting us to rekindle our alliances with place, with people, and with promise. He speaks about The Emergence Network, where most of his work is housed - and what he is hoping to do and already doing at this moment to invite; a politics of surprise, a post-activism that listens to grief, to bodily becomings, to nonhuman voices.
